You need to create a web-app for the example(s)... ROOT is technically a web-app (I think), so instead of putting it in ROOT, put the base folder for your webapp NEXT to ROOT i.e. in the CATALINA_HOME/webapps folder. You will also need to create a deployment descriptor and a context for your webapp
