An *excellent* point!

If anyone has problems with lockup on boot-

try powering the computer all the way down!

Settings retained by the NIC even on a reset had not occurred to me.

Do try the reserve parm and let me know if it works...

This happens to all three of my ne2000 cards!  
Two of them are Novell's and one is Artisoft.
The problem only occurs after the network has already 
been in use (by DOS or by a previous session of Linux).  
Then, the only way to boot Linux successfully is by doing 
a hard reset.  The three-finger salute is not enough.

I previously tried explicitly passing the card parameters
to my boot loader, but this had no effect.  However, I 
didn't use a "reserve" parameter (as in your example).
Perhaps I should try again.

Anyway, it's not a big issue.  I just have to make sure
that my computer has been properly reset before I try to
boot linux.
