The 1.7.185 tomsrtbt supports sparse superblocks.
The ?.?.??? version will support filetypes.
Since you say you have 1.7.185, I presume your problem is really
filetypes, not sparse superblocks.
If you can't wait until I make ?.?.???, then your best solution is to make
a 2.2.x kernel tomsrtbt with support for everything you
need. ?.?.??? will have a filetype-support-patched kernel, but, 2.2.x
kernels work fine with tomsrtbt and will support sparse-superblocks.

1. Make a kernel with minix fs, ramdisks, ext2fs, whatever else you need.
2. Customize tomsrtbt using unpack.s and buildit.s, replacing 1/zImage.
