Or the 'whatever steps are inbetween' probing, it may even be the NE2000
probing that has a problem.  What brand of NE2000 is it?  I have an open
request for someone to send me one of the broken NE2000 clones, so, if you
ever decide to splurge $10 for a better ethernet card, send me that one
and I'll troubleshoot exactly which driver fails where.
