Thanks Bj�rnen.
I have now solved the problem - by swapping RAM chips until I found a
combination that worked.
The RAM test I used was tomsrtbt memtest which I installed to floppy off
another machine (booting from the original tomstrbt floppy). It was happy
with RAM even though tomsrtbt wasn't.
