here's a patch and possibly a fix that worked for me. the commented out
sample to get a serial agetty working seems to be broken, possibly
because of a move/remove of /bin/login. the agetty program seems to
default to looking for /bin/login and failing if it doesn't find it.

so, i think the existing sample should read:

#c6:5:respawn:/usr/bin/agetty -l /usr/bin/login -w -I
'ATE0Q1&D2&C1S0=1\015' 115200 ttyS1

then, after playing around with trying to get a null-modem connection
working, i found that this works:

c7:5:respawn:/usr/bin/agetty -l /usr/bin/login -L -w 115200 ttyS0 vt100

the -L might not be necessary, the docs says that it removes the need
for a carrier detect, which is apparently useful for null-modem
connects. i found that i had to give the following command to kermit
though:

  set carrier-watch off

as well as:

  set speed 115200

then, i got connected no problem at all. with the '-l /usr/bin/login'
parameter, i would get the issue and asked for a login, but the passwd
prompt would never show up.

hope this helps...
