You da man!

My one Linux box is headless, so I've been using a serial terminal to
communicate with tomsrtbt. After upgrading to the lastest version of
tomsrtbt, I wondered why the heck I couldn't get to the password prompt.
After deciding to take a break from it for a few hours, I was really happy
to find someone else already solved the problem and posted a solution!

Actually, the serial terminal is working _better_ than ever. The "vt100"
was a new addition to my line, and boy does it make a world of difference!
Before, when using tomsrtbt and a serial terminal, the backspace and delete
keys wouldn't work. I always thought it was because of the spartan
enviroment, but obviously it was some kind of terminal mismatch because they
work great now. Double thanks! :)

While I'm on the topic of serial terminals, I thought I would pass-on a
little hint to the list. My serial console is a small computer running
Linux. Before I would always use minicom for serial communications, but
never really liked it because I had to learn yet another program's
keystrokes. Then I read someplace that the handy dandy screen program (the
terminal multiplexer) can use the serial port and found it works great. So,
simply typing "screen /dev/ttyS1" is my preferred way to use a serial
terminal now.
