It does start it.

Huh? The beginning of rc.custom is:

 pcmcia start
 eval `dhcpcd--`
 if [ "$IPADDR" != "" ]
 then
 ifconfig eth0 $IPADDR netmask $NETMASK up
 route add default eth0
 route add default gw $GATEWAY

If that doesn't start the network, I dunno what does...

eepro100 is hard compiled into the kernel. You probably cannot also load
it as a module. If there are 2, you probably need to give a boot: time
parameter to see both of them.

cat /proc/modules, and, no, compiled in stuff doesn't show up.

Try running it under itself.

There is one other person who has this problem. I don't know what it
could be, something about your environment is preventing Lua from running
correctly. Maybe your IFS or something with shell vars? The other person
didn't pursue diagnosing it with me.

What do you get if you just type:

 2/usr/bin/lua -e 'write(259+1)'

by itself? That should have *no problems*, if it does, maybe there is
something wrong with your libc5? I will have to drag out a RedHat system
and see what they screwed up.

Fwiw, the mylex is supported, at least.

It could easily be confusing the driver. There is a syntax shown in the
BootPrompt-HOWTO and the Ethernet-HOWTO for how to tell it to look for and
find the second card, and it might need that to see the first one.

What does 'ifconfig' say when typed all by itself?

Please pursue the Lua issue with me, it is going to byte more people if
there really is something about RedHat that breaks the buildit.s script.

In the meantime, (if you still need to rebuild, rather than just use the
boot: parms for the network cards), you can probably rebuild *when booted
under tomsrtbt*, with the drive mounted.
