I can confirm this behaviour with both redhat 7.0 and 7.1, I can't
run a chroot'ed /sbin/lilo successfully on them. Believe me, I've
tried. (I'm sure that I've mentioned this problem in previous
emails to this list).
(The rh7.1 installer's "rescue" mode is what I now tend to use for
this. The new rescue mode is a big improvemt -- but it doesn't
yet seem capable of doing a netboot.img network-based rescue mode,
only via a local cdrom).
In fact, I can't even chroot into a rh7.1 installation at all, the
chroot'ed /bin/sh (/bin/bash) shell (or glibc) complains about
things that it needs not being implemented in the running kernel.
It appears that the 2.0.x kernel in tomsrtbt (and probably all 2.2.x
kernels) are no longer able to do this sort of thing with systems
that are configured to use 2.4.x kernels. The problem is probably
even more invoved that this, eg (g)libc with changed kernel ioctl
calls and so on.
(Please tell me that I'm wrong... )
