John, Thanks for your quick response. You've confirmed my suspicion that under Solaris, GNU as will go on assuming that '/' starts a comment unless supplied the "--divide" option. The reason I wanted to know this is that when I'd brought up this behavior before in the forums, people have suggested that this is a "bug" which will go away in future versions of Binutils.
It appears that the GNU as maintainers are apprised of the situation, since under Linux GNU as, the "--divide" option is accepted but ignored (as "as --help" indicates). But I stand corrected: it is indeed up to the GNU as maintainers to update the man page to indicate the existence of this option. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
