As I pointed out previously, VIM is *NOT* 'linuxalike'. VIM is just VIM. Many, but not all, GNU/Linux distributions offer it, but then again some don't, and some offer different and incompatible programs as vi; meanwhile, VIM is used productively on many different systems (including OpenSolaris distributions) that don't include Linux at all. The logical direction you seem to want would be: /usr/fc5emul /usr/rhel4emul /usr/debiansargeemul /usr/mandriva2006emul /usr/freebsd54emul /usr/freebsd60emul ... where each directory would presumably contain symlinks into /usr/gnu, /usr, /usr/sfw, and a collection of software all its own. And make no mistake about it, there won't be nearly as much in common as there is specific to each distribution. There are many problems with this, of course, not least among them the cost of maintaining this horrific mess and the near-impossibility of tracking (possibly incompatible) patches and updates to these emulated user environments. If you really think this is the way to go, I think you'd get more mileage out of BrandZ, which will save you the trouble of rebuilding the environment you seem to want using OpenSolaris binaries. -- Keith M Wesolowski "Sir, we're surrounded!"
