Well right, I always worked in a merge workspace in my project
gatekeeping days...

I vaguely remember, though, that folks on our team would occasionally
take children of the *merge* workspace and do additional merges there.
Then putback into the merge workspace.

I did a few experiments just now, but I'm hazy on exactly how to best do
that.
