While we have been taking some baby steps to help make the final decisions, we are working on making some changes to the BugTraq's email notification program for notifications sent to non-Sun addresses. We will be piloting the change for Open Solaris in September.

Hi Rachna,
while I think this is a great step to have
made progress on, it is, as you say, a _baby_
step.

We've now had more than 2 years of OpenSolaris
out in the wild, and more than that courtesy
of the tonic pilot project.

To date, it appears to me and many others that
there has been sod-all progress towards getting
an open bug/rfe tracking system operational. I
am aware that there have been funding issues
from the Bugster side. I'm past caring, really.
I as well as the Bugster team share your frustration , however I am not sure I can blame the lack of progress on funding issues from the Bugster side.  The Bugster team was approached last year and the initial context was really about trying to improve our bridging/interfacing mechanisms for a Defect tracking system of OpenCommunity's choice to bridge with Bugster.

If there is no significant involvement of people
from Sun's Bugster team - and to date I have not
observed any such involvement - then the OpenSolaris
community appears to be doomed to live with
something which is less than second best.

That is not acceptable to me and many others in
the OpenSolaris community.

What other, concrete steps are you and the Bugster
team taking to assist with this process?
The BugTraq team has been involved  all along , however we did not make our presence felt on the forum.
The BugTraq team responded to the OpenCommunity's initial request with 2 options:
1. Use the existing Bugtraq with a custom UI to interface with the community.
2. Improve and support bridging mechansim to allow bridges from any Defect tracking system to BugTraq.
For various reasons, option 1 was rejected. Option 2 may not be necessary depending on the selection of a tool and its features. The tool selection process depended on the DTS requirements which the community has been discussing and the BugTraq team has provided their input/feedback in a separate thread.
In addition, the BugTraq team looked at any short term changes that could alleviate some of the pain that the Open Community feels in using the existing system ( please keep in mind that Bugster was never meant to be an Open Community tool ). That is where the email notification changes once implemented will provide updates to the non-Sun Community members.

Regards,
Rachna
