Which version of OpenSolaris is that, exactly?

Is it a DVD media or a CD media?

Haven't there been a few more prompts between "stage 2" and
the username / password prompt (grub boot menu? Keyboard
language prompt? Language selection? Or Installation variant?)

That seems to be grub's stage1 / stage2 boot code. stage1 silently runs,
stage2 prints something to the console. This is

user "jack" / password "jack" ?
(Assuming you're using OpenSolaris 2009.06 and not
Solaris Express Community Edition)

Check with "svcs -x" if any services failed to start.

The installation CD is supposed to automatically start an
X11 gui environment in which the installer is started.
Seems that didn't happen. Check the /var/log/Xorg.0.log
file if there had been any errors with starting the X11
server.
