<I really need to be able to name the columns in the grid!>

Tim, as stated, there will be improvements to how result columns are
names (i.e. the variable names from the Visualization query).  In the
meantime you could use the Sparql Editor to do this.  Add a Sparql
Editor component and have it listen to the Query Results Requested
event for the Visualization view.  This will display the query graph
in SPARQL.

Then wire the Sparql Editor to post an Query Results Requested event
and have the Results tab listen to the event in Execute Sparql Query.

You can edit the query, re-name variables, change the ordering of the
variable, etc, to get the result grid format you want.

Hope that helps some and thanks for the use case - that seems k=like a
reasonable thing users may want to do.
