In order to help prevent loss of data, Eclipse has some built-in versioning capabilities such as CVS and (optionally) SVN support. Do regular backups to CVS and you can roll back to any version from the past.
If you could send me the xls file (off-list) I can see if I can reproduce the problem, and identify where the problem might be. To me it sounds more like an RDF serialization (Jena) problem than a problem with the Excel importer.
