Yes. These are used when you type text into Ensemble using an underlying 
Adobe component.

You can use the characters (e.g. by copy/paste from some other 
document), but not the named entity references.
You can use numeric entity references too.

If these characters are already in the ontology they will be displayed 
by Ensemble.

Of course, you may find that you are using a character for which you are 
missing a font.
Also I would not be surprised if at least one layer of software missed 
support for some of the more recent Unicode characters outside the Basic 
Multilingual Plane (i.e. post Unicode 3.0).
