John, the documents hosted at spinrdf.org are the "official" specs aimed at implementors and advanced users. This approach is comparable to the RDF and OWL specifications on the W3C pages - these kinds of specs are not meant to be introductory.
If you haven't read them already, you may find the following blog entries helpful The Object-Oriented Semantic Web with SPIN Understanding SPIN Functions Understanding SPIN Templates In general, learning SPIN as a rule and constraint language should be straight-forward if you have a good command over SPARQL. SPIN basically adds a very light-weight vocabulary to link SPARQL queries with class definitions. Then, the topics of user-defined functions and templates are the next steps, but contain some of the real power of SPIN. Good luck, and as Scott states, please let us know which topics are unclear.
