Yes, you are right. It is a kind of class, Artifact. Please refer section
10.3 of UML spec. You will find that one can have attributes and operations
defined for artifact and its instances can be created. Artifacts can also
participate in composition and/or association relationships. See also:
Figure 10.2 - The elements defined in the Artifacts package.

I don't know of many tools that will allow to create an instance from a
deployment specification. Saw one example on Enterprise Architect by Sparx
Systems.
