Subject: Re: [Topcased-users] FUML (Executable UML) and ASL

Hi Bernard,

Do some you know FUML (Executable UML) and what is its purposes ?

Yes - we do. Since 1995 Pathfinder Solutions has been focused on applying
the principles of Shlaer-Mellor OOA/RD, eUML, MDA, and now fUML in an
approach we call Platform Independent MDD (PI-MDD). It essentially a focus on an executable subset of the UML with the intent of transforming complete,
executable (and therefore testable) UML models into product-grade
deployments. We deploy it in concert with agile and test driven techniques.

Is there some tutorials available ?

For a quick overview our white paper "PI-MDD Executive Summary" is available
at http://www.pathfindersolns.com/resources/whitepapers . Let me know if
you want more info after that.

Is there tools who implement FUML ?

We are primarily a training and mentoring organization focused on building
complex, embedded and other high performance systems in C, C++ and Java with our customers. We use the PathMATE transformation environment to transform
our fUML/PI-MDD models. PathMATE includes self-optimizing model compilers
and a very rich and efficient run-time platform for the generated code. The
PI-MDD approach and PathMATE are complete and mature method and technology
set implementing fUML.

PathMATE is Eclipse-based, and has Topcased bundled into its installation.
PathMATE also integrates with Rational Software Architect (RSA) and Rhapsody
UML editors. For an overview of PathMATE see
http://www.pathfindersolns.com/products/pathmate, or grab a datasheet at
http://www.pathfindersolns.com/about/product-datasheets .

As I understood, the goal of FUML is to define a more precise subset of
UML in order to be able to execute the model. That's look like an
interesting challenge ...
Oh yes. While the PathMATE base automation is very stable now - we've been automatically generating high-performance high-reliability software systems
for close to two decades now - the technical challenges for the specific
deployment environments (model compilers and run-time platforms) continue to
grow. We steadily evolve the PI-MDD approach to incorporate industry
lessons learned - like Agile and test driven - and the scope of the
problems/opportunities faced by our customers continues to grow as well.

I hope this helps.

- Peter
