Yes, I saw that when I used the 5.3.0, but a strange point :
If you define an actor, and a class, then creates a sequence diagram with a
lifeline.
Then using lifeline properties, you click on "represents", the actor or the
class will not appear in displayed box, but you're right, you can do a drag
and drop to define that the lifeline represents the actor or the classe.
That could be more coherent ...
About diagram look and feel, of course we can say "UML is done for design
and modelization, diagram look and feel does not matter".
For me, that won't be right : the first opinion about an UML tool is done by
diagram look and feel, and UML diagrams are included in document or slides
show : in a slides show diagram look and feel is important. Especially
because slides show are done for managers whose reactions are linked to
schema beauty. If schemas are not nice, managers who do not care so much
about design and modelization will have a negative feeling ....
And I do not speak about student who learn UML for the first time ...

First point has been fixed/managed in 5.3.0 available this evening :-)
You can now drag and drop any classifier on a lifeline and set the
"represent" property.
... and set different other properties as this mechanism is generic.

Since you asks me to detailed why I prefer former topcased UML editors, here
are some remarks on papyrus editors. It was a long time that I did not use
it, and papyrus editors seems me better than what I remenbered.
Anyway :
- Sequences diagram are still not easy, espacially to define that a lifeline
represents a class
- some glyphs are not usual ones, for components or artifacts, this is
stereotypes which are used
- toolbox are less organized than topcased ones
- contextual menu for child creation is not structured and the long list of
available childs is not easy to use
- manifestation and components realization seem not better than those of
topcased ... I am interested by these ones, because it's a simple solution
for students to define some traceabillites between schemas
- at the end, I prefer look and feel of topcased UML diagram but this is
maybe a question of habits.

Polarsys is an Eclipse industrial Working group in charge of hosting and
building a set of open source tools for embedded and critical systems. You
can find more at http://www.polarsys.org/ TOPCASED components should migrate
to Polarsys in 2013 (I cannot say when exactly for now).
You are right : new Papyrus-based TOPCASED editors have brought new
customization capabilities that were simply not possible with old editors
but those new editors suffered of quality during one year and were less
mature than old ones.
Now we hope that TOPCASED 5.2.0 has reached a good level of maturity and
that this level will continue to increase with TOPCASED 5.3.0 as other bugs
have been fixed.
Bernard, could you elaborate a little bit on what you call "usable"? what or
which features do you like in "old" editors that you cannot find in new ones
and that provide usability?

I should miss some messages, but what is PolarSys initiative ?
I understood that, due to some tocased design choices, it was not possible
with topcased UML editor to adress Papyrus features such as to create a
customized UML environment.
My remark is not an "attack" (critique would be the french word), to create
a product, we all know that it is needed to make choices ...
A great things, would be to integrate Papyrus features in topcased editors
which, for me, are more usable than papyrus ones.

sure externals can still contribute bug fixes on old UML editors. This is
open source principle ;-)
I could not find any patch as bugFix associated to the bug you mention.
Where is it? did I miss it?
Concerning the strategy, things are simple : there is no money for support
on "old editors" today. It does not mean that this situation will remain the
same in the future as there is Polarsys initiative that should address this
kind of situation.
Before Polarsys really addresses that maintenance we have to find alternate
solutions. One is to get people ready to contribute become "committers" and
add their patches.
At AtoS we are ready to give some support to those new committers and act as
"mentors".
You can just candidate for that and provide some experience on development
and on Eclipse modeling and graphical frameworks.
