Hey Jack, will you update your installed system?
I hope the places menu is working now. I think the issue was that the trash 
directory didn't exist, so I do it in two ways now. First I try to use  
xdg-mime for inode/directory (pcmanfm in our case) and do
pcmanfm trash:///
Or I try to create the directory in the C++ fashion and open it, though the 
first method should always work.
Anyhow try it out and let me know if it fixes it for you. I may just use 
volumeicon-alsa instead if we cannot fix this issue.
I will test in virt-manager/kvm and see if the icons persist after logout. They 
work on my installed system reliably.
How much memory do you have allocated in vbox for ToriOS?
