There are two separate efforts:

TK is reproducing your approach of a C++ extension which communicates with a 
Python process.

The CuteHg project (also here on bitbucket) has implemented pure C++ extensions 
for their project.  It reads the Mercurial dirstate file directly for the 
overlays.  I don't know how well this works today, but it does appear promising.

I would like to have this settled by 0.8 (July 1), but I haven't had time to 
devote to this myself yet.
