As a simple user...the overlay icons are a big draw for me. The directory
browser might be enough to retain me, but I would want to be sure that it
didn't feel clunky to use (which is a complaint I have with most open source
directory browsers and file open menus).
Given the issues I've read about re: Windows 7, deprecation may be the best
move. I'm not sure whether the timetable for removal is overly optimistic or
not. I would want to be very sure that the new directory browser worked
well, from both a technical and a UI standpoint, before the overlays are
removed. I have my doubts about whether a first release directory browser
would be polished enough to be as usable as the overlay icons have been.
(Though I hope to be proven wrong, if the project moves in that direction.)
As a mostly non-coder (and certainly not proficient enough to be of help in
this project), I say: Do what you need to do, but please do what you can to
ease us into the transition. (I guess my main point: don't be afraid to push
overlay icon removal to 0.12 if that's necessary.)
