While updating the screenshots for the 1.0 docs, it became obvious that the default MS-Windows theme in GTK-2.18 is a step down from the GTK-2.16 that we shipped with 0.8 and 0.9, especially on Vista. Downgrading GTK is not an option for several reasons, so I'd like to call out for people to look for a GTK theme they like. If it's an improvement over the default theme on XP, Vista, and Windows 7, we'll take a vote here and include it as the new default in the 1.0 release.
