I'm wondering whether it might be due to the errant loading of the eol 
extension that I just described in the thread "TortoiseHg not always honouring 
eol settings"..

Mine is set to "unspecified", which from the help message sounds like it is set 
to "auto"..0

Now that I know that eol really is turned off, I just did the following:

  hg update --clean none
  hg update default

After that, the TortoiseHg "Refresh status..." widget did appear again, but 
only for about 4 minutes. And then in a DOS prompt I typed "hg status" and it 
took about 6 minutes.

Oddly, though, my Manifest view is displaying a red exclamation mark against 
the majority of my files, even though they are freshly updated, and I have made 
no edits. When I say  "Visual Diff" I get "There are no file changes to view"

So I'm still not sure this is all totally fixed...
