For me, coming from git, I have no problem with removing history, using the
mq extension's strip command. A possible workflow could be:

1. pull from remote
2. check the differences between your latest commit and what you just
pulled, by:
    i. in the TortoiseHg Workbench, select your commit,
    ii. then Ctrl-select the commit that you want to compare with,
    iii. right-click one of them and select Visual Diff...
3 a. If you're happy with the changes, merge them with your work
3 b. Otherwise, use the strip command to remove the just-pulled changesets

An alternative way to do it would be to preview the changes in a clone, and
just throw the clone away after you're done. If you're on Linux, cloning
can be a really fast operation.
