I'm glad to see Freshman and non-techies are perceived as legitimate candidates for Open Source tools exposure. (Maybe this is where I can mention Make magazine and the more broad Maker culture. They don't just do software; hardware and art are legitimate arenas of participation to "Makers". I'll stay in software, personally.)
I like your ideas for cross-campus interaction, Mel. Remember, even if they aren't within an easy commute, the Internet is available for interaction. I saw a news program that reported Tweets with personal videos about Elizabeth Taylor.
