First of all, I'm *really* glad someone's looking at the textbook! 
Thanks for picking up on this.

Andrew, for more concrete use cases, it might be interesting to check 
out the professors profiled at 
http://teachingopensource.org/index.php/POSSE_2011_applicants -- these 
are the folks who'll be in the POSSE cohort this summer, and their 
classes are an interesting mix of both #1 and #2.
