Jeff,
You are perfectly entitled to feel that a commercial
link between Madness and Doc Martens is crass, but I
would point out a number of salient issues.
Doc Martins have been a vital part of UK
counter-culture and underground fashion for many
years, they can safely be described as an icon in
their own right. Madness have been associated with
Doc Martins since their inception. Dress it up
however you like, Madness have a new album coming out
in three weeks and these thing do not promote
themselves. As both celebrate major anniveraries
this year, it would seem a perfect opportunity to
celebrate both the band and brand.
If there is one thing Madness have never and could
never be accused of, it is taking advantage of their
fans. If you feel a particular promotion is tacky,
then have no part in it, but don't partronise those of
us that do.
