Good afternoon/evening, Sorry if this is slightly off-topic, but it has come to my attention that there has been some negative reaction to my posting regarding the once-rumored-but-not-materialized title for the new album, Runaway Train, vis a vis the London train accident and I would like to address this. Some may have considered my posting a joke, which it was not, or offensive/insensitive/inappropriate, which it may or may not be--that's for the individuals and/or co-mods to determine, I suppose. Just to avoid any such misinterpretation, I specifically referred to the accident as "horrible." How anyone could then interpret my posting as a joke or offensive I don't get. Obviously, that this is a gigantic tragedy should go without saying and largely has onlist. If I'm not mistaken, only one person mentioned something about thinking of the victims. I'm not saying there should have been more or less reaction, just that the one mention was appropriate, I thought. This is a forum for discussing Madness and we have discussed Madness during all kinds of tragedies, be it school shootings in the U.S., Diana's death and countless global military conflicts. No doubt we will continue when the monarchy next changes hands as well, and there's nothing wrong with that. It is mathematically unlikely--though not impossible--that anyone on this list was directly touched by this tragedy, but someone may know someone who knows someone and so on, so I apologize to anyone touched in this way and offer condolences. I myself 5 years ago was involved in a fatal train accident during an ice storm, so it is not something I take lightly. Of course, the music of Madness means very little when compared with the lives lost in this train wreck. I was merely pointing out that Runaway Train would have proven to be an unintentionally unfortunate choice for an album title. I'm sure in fact that this accident would have necessitated a change of title, further delaying its release. Sorry again for any trouble and/or misunderstandings.
