Hello all in Maddieland,
Ever since I put my votes in for this I've been thinking that a Top 5 for
this album doesn't really do it justice. There are too many great songs not
getting mentioned (even though Simesy says all of them have had a vote
somewhere). So here is my Top 11! Actually, make that a Top 12!
1. Elysium
2. Lovestruck
3. No Money
4. You're Wonderful (not previously considered)
5. Drip Fed Fred
6. The Communicator (it's lost that initial appeal and so drops from No.3)
7. The Wizard - I love the whispered vocals in the verses. Very spooky and
sinister. And it also has my favourite line on the album, "Time, like
water, flows by 'til we die".
8. 4am - I really love this and it gets better with every listen. Far
superior to Suggs' version and reminiscent, in feel, to "Prospects". Be
honest now, would so many of you dislike this if you hadn't heard it done
by Suggs already? I think it would be regarded as a Madness classic by now
if it weren't for that.
9. If I Didn't Care - I just love the sparse arrangement in this. Very
subtle production from Clive and Alan and very underplayed. Probably one of
Suggs' best vocal performances ever too (apart from the intro, which I
agree with whoever else said it, should have been left as is from the
Maddley).
10. Johnny The Horse - A great song but not as great as many others (IMHO).
And I can feel a strange Sweetest Girl feeling towards it coming over me
after it bombed. It just doesn't quite go to where it should. Brilliant
live though.
11. Saturday Night Sunday Morning - The introduction to this really annoys
me. I think it's one of the blandest songs Madness have recorded for the
most part (so could be a hit!). Absolutely brilliant instrumental playout
though.
12. Going To The Top - Just takes too long to get to the top, leaving no
time for it to go elsewhere. For that fact it is a very cleverly structured
song but doesn't quite hit the mark when sitting alongside the rest on this
album. The "Like the stars up in the sky..." bit almost saves it from
finishing bottom but not quite.
Overall, nine absolute classics plus three very good songs alongside them.
There, that's better. I needed to get that off my chest;-)
Cheers for now,
Peter
