According to Woody in the Radio 1 Story Of Madness thing a few years
ago, it was because the producers were under pressure to come up with
a clean cut, slick production.

Woody said that the best way to get a good drum sound was to not have
a drummer on it!

 I guess it was also a sign of the times, everything had started to go
this way around then.

I can't help thinking what that album would have been like given a
simpler approach. Just put the boys in the studio and record it more
or less live!
