The way I understood the story about the drums on 'Mad Not Mad' was that
Woody turned up at the studio to lay his parts of the album down, and was
told he wasn't needed because it'd been programmed instead. This getting
really confusing now.

Not at all, Pete, he was responsible for programming the drum tracks
on the new equipment. I think the inlay of 'Mad Not Mad' credits him
with drums, programming and triggers. I'm still not convinced that
the two tracks in question ('Sweetest Girl' and 'Uncle Sam') were
totally programmed anyway. I'm fairly sure there is live drum on
both tracks and I imagine the drum 'machines' were used for added
effects. If anything I think that 'Yesterday's Men' sounds the most
'artificial', but I'm not knocking the song (before anyone flames me)
:)
