Hello chasps, Please take time to read this. It is about the kakworm currently doing the rounds in e-mails. First of all it's a worm not a virus. This means it doesn't infect your system just passes itself around - a bit like shit on the bottom of your shoe - it's an annoyance. It is rated by Norton's as unlikely to cause harm. The cause is a loop-hole in the Outlook Express program code. The worm passes itself along in e-mail signatures. There is no attachment. Once the mail is opened, the worm has been transferred without the recipient's knowledge. Those of you who regulary update your virus software should have no problems because it'll be detected. For more information, go to: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/vinfodb.html and search for 'kak'. There is a link to the Microsoft website which has a patch to close the loop-hole (scriptlet.typelib/Eyedog) or alternatively go straight to: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms99-032.asp to download this patch (only 108k). Before installing the patch, follow the instructions below to make sure you haven't got the little blighter! This is copied from the Microsoft Website. FIRSTLY - PRINT OUT THIS MAIL FOR EASE STEP 1 1) Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders. 2) In the Named box, type kak.hta, and then click the drive letter for your hard disk in the Look in box. 3) Click to select the Include Subfolders check box, and then click Find Now. 4) If you see the kak.hta file in the Search Results box, right-click the file, click Delete, and then close the Search Results dialog box. 5) If you had this file, proceed to step 2 STEP 2 1) Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK. 2) Locate the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\cAgOu 3) Right-click the registry key (cAgOu), click Delete, and then close Registry Editor. These instructions were taken from the Microsoft Website. MICROSOFT RECOMMENDS THAT YOU BACK UP REGEDIT.EXE AS A PRECAUTION BEFORE YOU START STEP 2. The rider is that Microsoft accepts no liability etc etc etc. I followed these instructions 3 weeks ago when I had it and it worked for me. I also accept no liability etc etc etc ************************************ Please remember to keep updating your viral protection regularly from Norton's and MacAfee's websites.
