Spooky! I was gonna sugggest much the same thing Steve, as I've wanted to
get this off my chest for a bit. Dunno if it's interesting to the rest of
you but - hey! - things have been slow on here for a while....
My one and only jelly-legged brush with the lads came when the Nutty Boys
played the Venue, New Cross in 1993.
After the gig and a few drinks too many I sweatily approached Lee as he
stood at the bar.
Now Steve, if you thought your introduction to Suggs was bad, this was
right up there with it: 'Hello Lee, how you doing? Don't worry, I'm not a
groupie.'
Blank look, then after a few seconds (clearly recognising an
all-too-common inebriated and nervous Maddie) he shoots back a beaming smile
and gladly poses for far too many photos than any sax player should ever
have to endure.
Verbal diarrohea then takes over (me, not him) and I end up gabbling
complete gibberish for five minutes, which has him cracking up for some
reason.
'Fancy a drink?' he suddenly says.
  Gulp.
  'Er, yeah, yeah whatever.'
'Good lad, I'll have a tequila and grapefruit. Hehe.'
To be fair he bought me one back and more polite chit-chat followed for
five minutes (''I was at Madstock'' I venture. Amused smile: ''Really? So
was I'') then he says: 'I'm having a dance. Coming?'
Took to the floor and - lo and behold - One Step Beyond comes on. So I'm
there. With Kix. Dancing. To Madness. Does it really get any better than
that?
After another number (don't ask - not a clue) he clapped me on the back,
said 'Cheers Iain - see you again. Gotta go' and disappeared backstage.
Meanwhile, flatmate was in the corner, looking very peed off and bored.
Needless to say he's not a Madness fan and couldn't see what all the fuss
was about.
Floated home, completely and unashamedly starstruck. What a top, TOP
bloke.
And the photos still make me laugh - my grin is so huge I look like Billie
Piper.
  Ah, happy days,
Iain M
