Morning Maddies,
I hope this Sunday finds everyone bright and breezy!
Things do seem to be a tad on the quiet side at the moment don't they? Ah
well, not to worry. I'm sure things will pick up soon.
In the meantime, here's something that may get you all talking.
I was in the pub last night with a few mates and one of them said `Have you
heard what Pearl Jam have done?`. Not being a fan of the band and knowing
very little about them I revealed my ignorance and replied `No, what?`.
Well, it turns out that the band have been so sick of the fans paying over
the odds for crap quality bootlegs that the band decided to do something
about it. They have just (or are just about to) release 25 albums (yes, 25!)
with each one featuring a different show from their European tour.
This looks to me like an arrangement that will make everyone happy (apart
from the bootlegger). Quality is of the highest standard as it's all from
the soundboard and you get proper sleeve artwork etc, so the fans are happy,
whilst the band and record company are obviously pleased as the fans are
buying the official product rather than some crappy bootleg recorded on
someone's naff Matsui tape-recorder.
Obviously this got me thinking. We all know that Virgin love to screw the
fans for every penny they have by releasing 15 different versions of the
same album, with the number of Madness concerts that have been recorded,
Virgin must be sitting on a potential goldmine here.
So, what does everyone think? I have loads of bootlegs all on tape and
whilst I could copy them all to CD, I really can't be bothered with the
hassel, and anyway, I'd love to have some proper artwork etc.
I'm amazed that Virgin haven't thought about this already. It won't stop,
but it'll certainly reduce the number of bootlegs being bought.
Any comments?
Robert
