Wassup Maddies!!
It's been a while since I've made any input to the list, and I'm sure a few
have missed me (well, The Muscat at least!!)
I've reviewed the Top Ten of 1980 and have come up with the following
conclusion...
The Top Ten on the show seems to have been worked out on the calculation of
five points per week on the chart and an extra five for every week at No. 1.
They did, however, make one mis-calculation with regards that megastar of
the USA (and now practically unknown back home), Sheena Easton.
This was how 'they' worked it out:
Weeks on chart = 5 points, Weeks at No. 1 = 5 points, Highest Chart position
= tie breaker
No. 10 Kelly Marie 23, 2, 1 = 125
No. 9 David Bowie 27, 2, 1 = 145
No. 8 Sheena Easton 30, 0, 3 = 150 *
No. 7 Liquid Gold 30, 0, 2 = 150
No.6 Dexys MRN 29, 2, 1 = 155
No. 5 Blondie 30, 5, 1 = 175
No. 4 Police 32, 5, 1 = 185
No. 3 Specials 38, 2, 1 = 200
No. 2 Madness 50, 0, 3 = 250
No. 1 Bad Manners 53, 0, 3 =265
* Based on the assumed criteria, Sheena Easton actually spent 36 weeks on
the chart in 1980 (they seem to have missed the 6 weeks 'One Man Woman'
spent there) she should have been placed 5th with 180 points.
There was a major flaw in their calculations though. They only counted the
weeks spent on the chart by singles which first entered the chart in 1980.
This disregarded the 7 weeks spent on the chart by One Step Beyond during
1980 (which first charted on Nov 10 1979) but included the 5 weeks by Baggy
Trousers and 6 weeks by Embarrassment which were actually in 1981. With
these rules, Bad Manners lose 8 weeks of Lorraine's 12 week run.
If you count only the weeks spent on the chart from Jan 1 1980 to Dec 31
1980 (including 1 week each for singles which were in the chart on Jan 1 and
Dec 31) the results would be as follows:
No. 10 Kelly Marie 23, 2, 1 = 125
No. 9 Liquid Gold 30, 0, 2 = 150
No.8 Dexys MRN 29, 2, 1 = 155
No. 7 David Bowie 30, 2, 1 = 165
No. 6 Sheena Easton 36, 0, 3 = 180
No. 5 Specials 35, 2, 1 = 185
No. 4 Blondie 32, 5, 1 = 185
No. 3 Police 33, 5, 1 = 190
No. 2 Bad Manners 45, 0, 3 =225
No. 1 Madness 46, 0, 3 = 230
Incidentally, Mountain Boy's claim for the Jam would have earned them 225
points, putting them at No. 2. 41 weeks on the chart with 4 weeks at No. 1.
17 of those weeks were with re-released singles, though.
My figures are borne out by the Guinness Book Of Hit Singles which lists
Madness as having the most weeks on the chart in 1980 with 46 weeks.
I hope this finally settles argument about who was the most successful band
(or artist) of 1980!
Goodnight.
Andrew.
