Hi Graham and all you Maddies,

>on the bootleg album Nutty dread you can hear the
>different words to "The sun and the rain". its a live
>cd from 1983.
>and the words " in the shadow of the underground" can
>clearly be heard . i infact prefer thease better than
>the one we know. there are a few other differences
>but i cant remember off the top of my head!

This was the version I fell in love with after their performance on The
Tube in early 1983 and the subsequent gig in the Apollo, Glasgow and then
Radio One broadcasting the performance at the Dominion Theatre just after
the tour had been completed. Christmas lights also get mentioned in the
lyrics. And the guitar hardly comes into the instrumental break. It's all
Lee's sax, which I much prefer. The day I have a band and do a cover of
this it'll be the sax to the fore in the instrumental break;-)

Cheers,
Peter
PS. I must thank Mr Smash for the namecheck in his e-mail last week
regarding the DJ interviewing Lennon. What an honour to be regarded as such
a fountain of mindless trivia;-) I had no clue who it was but luckily Iain
"Mr Armani" Mason saved the day;-)
