Personally speaking I find it difficult to label bands such as
Madness, Specials etc. as Ska at all. In fact, much of the 2-Tone
stuff, is much more diverse, taking in elements of later JA
music & reggae, as well as other influences.

For instance, listen to the Beat, and notably their excellent second
album. Also, Madness were a ska influenced band, never a straight ska
band.

I appreciate that music can evolve into something almost
undistinguishable from it's origin, but still find it hard to compare
bands such as the Skatalites, Buster's All-Stars, Baba Brookes Band to
the Specials, Madness, Selecter, Intensified, Hotknives etc.

As for the Slackers being the best ska band ever, I would not agree,
but it just goes to show what a great seed was planted in the Jamaican
recording studios all those years ago.

All the best
Andy
