it seems that ska's going to have a revival every 15-20 years (early 60s,
early 80s, mid-90s), so whenever a new hype is on about ska, a new wave is
developed. in reality, the only real ska that was popular was the jamaican
style. hardly any of the bands that became popular in the states in the 90s
were ska, most were ska-influenced, if that. the slackers are definitely ska
though, but they were never played extensively on the radio or did big tours.
the mighty mighty bosstones are ska-influenced and i guess they were the most
popular during the latest revival (or whatever you want to call it). the
"second wave," which is usually just the 2tone era, was madness (at least the
first album), the beat, bad manners, etc etc. they were more ska-influenced
than actually ska too. i'm predicting a "fourth wave" in japan around 2010.
