The first reference I recall seeing to the '500
copies' was in the discography at the back of the
'Take it or Leave it' film book, but no, I'm not
convinced there were only 500 either, but perhaps no
more than say 1000 or 1500 or there would be a greater
number still in general circulation today. Reason why
the 500 number is so familiar? My cynicism tells me
that this was yet another rather devious marketing
ploy by Stiff Records. Don't forget Stiff sold these
records direct to the public so if they could have the
public believe that it was some sort of rarity, then
ultimately they would of course sell more copies and
at higher prices.

As for concern at paying over the odds for this item,
although it may not be quite as rare as some of the
other promos and test pressings that sell for less, it
has now been recognised as being a key Madness rarity
for more or less 20 years and as such it holds its
value extremely well. Even if you end up having to
fork out 40-50 or $80 for it I doubt you would have
too much trouble getting your money back if you ever
decided to part with it....

....but Don't Quote Me on That!
