I found this point interesting. And I don't claim to know the
truth on this one mate, I certainly have never worked in a record company.
But my perspective is that there are lots of artists
that lose control of their catalouges.

In George Marshalls book Total Madness he mentions the dire finacial
problems the band were in following Zarjazz and how they owed virgin a lot
of money by the end of The Madness and I think the phrase used was "at least
Virgin had the back catalouge to make up their losses on"

Then in 1992 various band members often said they got involved in Divine
Madness because they had no choice over whether the album would be released
and so they would rather be involved to make sure that things were done in
the best taste.

Now you may be right and these are stories to deflect the money issue,
but I think legal and finacial situations can often conspire against bands
to rob them of the close links of control and ownership over songs and
recordings that they wrote and sing upon. Micheal Jackson (or possibly sony
now) own publishing rights to all the Beatles catalouge. While Im told that
most record companies own the rights to the recordings they finance though
not the songs lyrics and arrangements as a whole.

Just this week another band I know we share a like of "Space"
have had there old record company release a Greatest hits album
that the band did not want released, which is to be followed by
a single that features "Jamie Murphy" on vocals and he has left
the band now which makes little sense other than the fact that
legally the record company can do what it likes with Space's
recordings to cash in on a band that's left it's label.

I would think your statement more often is correct when applied
to current bands that have a ongoing relationship with a record
company and a current contract, or a contract that has clear
guidelines about control of releases. I would expect they still
receive their royalties from these songs of course.

Sunday afternoon where around 25 serving staff will gather to race against
each other in the world's most infamous square mile while carrying a tray,
loaded with a glass, ashtray and bottle, on one hand.
The race will be officially started by Suggs and will be covered on national
TV - so be sure to look out for it - and the winner will receive the
Kronenbourg 1664 Challenge Cup"

Do you think he will start the race by shouting "Waiter!"
