Hi Jonathon et al,

Cheers for your thoughts, I wouldn't say I'm an expert
on the matter either, but it does strike me that those
bands who express opposition to particular releases
are those who have previously parted company with that
record label. You mention Space, among others I also
recall Pulp's fury when the compilation of their early
hits was put out by their old record company.

Madness however have not fallen out with Virgin and
still have strong links with them. Like you I also
recall the band's lack of control over the decision to
release the original 'Divine', but as you say this was
done in order to clear some bad debts. Since then, and
unless someone is able to correct me on this, I have
not heard a single band member voice any opposition to
the endless re-releases of compilation albums that
have ensued, but should they express such views
collectively, I'm quite sure that Virgin would respect
their wishes.

What to me is more likely is realising they seem to
earn more from re-released compilation packages than
new studio albums, the band are quite happy to let
this strategy continue. I'm sure that none of us can
really begrudge them that, its just a shame that the
whole process doesn't really do anything for their
overall reputation.

Chris
