Read Lee Jalali's remarkable story and then join him and more than 6,000 other Amnesty members <http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=bdJGKQNtEiKLKYL&s=ddJDIPMmF4JILOOuA&m=ljLYKcNPJoL8F> who've pledged this month to shine the light of hope for human rights by becoming a member today. Dear pete, Alyaksandr Kazulin – the prisoner of conscience who our Amnesty letter-writing group in Reston, Virginia hoped to free – was imprisoned far away in Belarus. So, imagine my surprise when, as I described the case to my neighbor, she told me that Kazulin's wife, Iryna, was staying with that very neighbor while receiving treatment for breast cancer. We met Iryna. She showed us films of the rigged election that her husband was unjustly imprisoned for protesting after a flagrantly unfair trial. Now, all those postcards, letters and emails we were sending became even more personal. It was like we were trying to free a member of our own family. As Amnesty builds towards our 2009 Global Write-a-thon, I'm asking you to support our work to free prisoners of conscience. I know from personal experience that – working and writing together – we have a powerful human impact. We only have one week left to meet our goal of 10,000 September pledges in support of Amnesty's work. If you act before September 30th, your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar. <http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=eqLMKZOFKlJSI8K&s=ddJDIPMmF4JILOOuA&m=ljLYKcNPJoL8F> Join now before the September 30th deadline. <http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=hjJSL8PRIoIZKiJ&s=ddJDIPMmF4JILOOuA&m=ljLYKcNPJoL8F> Image removed by sender. Close to home. On August 16th last year, I got the best birthday present anyone can imagine. It happened to be my birthday when, after serving 2 years of his unjust prison sentence, Alyaksandr Kazulin was finally released. Our letter-writing group's tremendous sense of joy and satisfaction was tempered by sadness. Despite devoting so much of her energy and passion to freeing her husband, Iryna died before he was released. I've been an active Amnesty member for over two decades. I'm sharing the story of Alyaksandr and Iryna because I hope it will inspire you to lend your immediate financial support to Amnesty's vitally important work. <http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=bnKGIQMtHiLOL1I&s=ddJDIPMmF4JILOOuA&m=ljLYKcNPJoL8F> Join now before the September 30th deadline. What can be more powerful than people coming together and learning that their letter-writing – their willingness to call for justice – has helped one more person get freed? I really hope you'll choose this moment to stand with other grassroots supporters of Amnesty in strengthening the work of a truly remarkable organization. Thanks for all you do. Lee Jalali (and my fellow Amnesty group members from Reston, VA.) P.S. It's not just the Kazulins' story that keeps us going. Amnesty Group 530 has also seen the release of two other prisoners of conscience we've worked on – Father Ly (Vietnam) and Dr. Binayak Sen (India). <http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=egIMIZOFJlJVJbL&s=ddJDIPMmF4JILOOuA&m=ljLYKcNPJoL8F> Please join to support critical work like this right now. Thanks so much. <http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=htKSJ8PRLoI2LlK&s=ddJDIPMmF4JILOOuA&m=ljLYKcNPJoL8F> Image removed by sender.
