GTK apps are accidentally using Xmir today (bug 1672931).
So is this just a problem with Xmir-launched apps then?

OSK doesn't work with Xmir or gtk3
enable the On Screen Keyboard (from indicator menu or from system settings)
open gedit or terminix (without Xmir) and try to type something, OSK doesn't
show, same with running on Xmir
