Release: Artful/17.10 Manually removed libnss-resolve to simulate the result of only having installed ubuntu-minimal (netplan configured with networkd as renderer).
1) Actual result is that /etc/resolv.conf is empty (except for comments). 2) systemctl status systemd-resolved * systemd-resolved.service - Network Name Resolution Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/systemd-resolved.service; disabled; vendor preset: enabled) Drop-In: /lib/systemd/system/systemd-resolved.service.d └─resolvconf.conf Active: inactive (dead) 3) systemd-resolve --status Failed to get global data: Unit dbus-org.freedesktop.resolve1.service not found. journalctl |grep resolve Jul 13 17:14:12 bar-artful6402 kernel: Key type dns_resolver registered Jul 13 17:28:58 bar-artful6402 dbus[765]: [system] Activating via systemd: service name='org.freedesktop.resolve1' unit='dbus-org.freedesktop.resolve1.service' Jul 13 17:28:58 bar-artful6402 dbus[765]: [system] Activation via systemd failed for unit 'dbus-org.freedesktop.resolve1.service': Unit dbus-org.freedesktop.resolve1.service not found. I discovered for systems which I bring up by using debootstrap and then extend that installation to be bootable, I end up with nplan installed but not libnss-resolve. This results in broken DNS resolution when starting to use nplan. It looks like nplan is a dependency of ubuntu-minimal but libnss- resolve is only in ubuntu-standard. But it is also required when using networkd as renderer for netplan.
