Title:
  no sound at all; must reboot machine to regain sound; happens once a
  week and dont know what triggers the problem

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  from time to time, i'll open a video or an mp3 or whatever else uses
  sound and will get no sound on playback. i will get no sound at all,
  not even system sound. if i reboot the machine, i regain sound as
  usual. a few days later, i will lose sound again. reboot again. sound
  again. days later, no sound. reboot, repeat.
