You guys are talking past each other.

You're talking about compression levels.  He's talking about the
encoding (bitrate or sample size) of the digital stream itself.  24/96
is a lot more work for the decoder than 16/44.1 and the Touch is just
barely capable of managing it.

I get the distinct impression that FLAC was developed and optimized
almost exclusively with 16/44.1 in mind.  It does poorly on anything
greater.  At 16/44.1 the difference in processing required for -0 and
-8 compression level decoding is very small.  I'm pretty certain that's
not the case for higher bitrate material.
