I've had great success with this device from Artcessories:

It can be had from Amazon, Musician's Friend, and other online
retailers for under $100.  It acts as a USB sound card with RCA line
in/out jacks.  The input can be set to either line-in or phono, so it
will act as a preamp for a turntable.  It has a knob to set the signal
level which will add gain if needed for those low signal lps.

This could be a cleaner solution for you.  I found it nice to be able
to dispense with the old receiver I was using solely as a preamp for my
TT.
